KIMONO OF THE SEVEN SPECIES

In the Torah (First Testament) the land of Israel is blessed with the Seven Species: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. They were the first fruit and the only acceptable fruit offerings at the Temple. When I was instructed to create a kimono about locality, I chose to focus on these First Fruits, which are a unique part of the history of the Jewish people and Israel. In my kimono I used the Penrose pattern making technique, meaning that the pieces would always connect to one another and were interchangeable and could be swapped out.

Digital print on cotton.
